As per the report by Nafpaktia News, a man named Haris, who was 40 years old and owned a dog, passed away on November 9, 2017, due to an accident with a cement mixer. The incident occurred on the Old Ring Road, close to River Evinos. The news of his demise was a great shock to the nearby community who had already lost his brother in a similar accident a few years back.
It’s still unclear how this contemporary version of Hachiko managed to reach the exact spot of the tragic accident, which is a considerable distance of 7.5 kilometers away from his home in Nafpaktos. But what’s even more surprising is that he has chosen to stay put at his owner’s roadside memorial, mourning for a year and a half now and repeatedly returning to the same location. Despite the kind attempts of the community to get him off the road and offer him a new home, he seems determined to stay where he is.
The locals were deeply moved by the unwavering devotion of a dog who refused to leave his owner’s side even after his passing. Despite their efforts to persuade him, the determined canine insisted on staying put and eventually made the area his new home.
To make things easier for him, the community came together to build a small shelter by the highway, set up a shrine in honor of his owner, and regularly provide him with food and water. The faithful creature spends his days gazing into the distance, patiently awaiting his beloved human’s return, earning him the nickname “Greek Hachiko” as a tribute to the renowned Akita.
